Austin
I will actually begin my journey before I leave Austin. It turns out that Pappy O’Daniel, the campaigning governor of Mississippi in the film, was actually based on a real-life governor of Texas. Because of this, I will take a tour of the Texas state Capitol to learn about past politics of Texas, and gain a little information about Pappy himself, like the fact that he was a singer. I believe that this will help me to engage in the politics of the modern South versus those of the past. After my visit there, I take off for Tyler.
Music on the road to Tyler
Throughout my entire drive, I will be making my way through the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack. It will help me to feel like the characters of that film and how they were on a journey too. Also, on this leg of the drive, I will listen to some of the real Pappy O’Daniel’s music, such as the song “Please Pass the Biscuits, Pappy.”
Tyler
During my stop in Tyler, I will be staying at the La Quinta Inn at 1601 West Southwest Loop 323. While there, I have three places that I will be interested in visiting. The first is the Cotton Belt Depot. This is a museum set in an old depot that served trains on the Cotton Belt Railroad. It serves as a reminder of the past, when railroads were THE major means of mass transportation. The transition from railroads to more modern means of transportation, such as automobiles and airplanes, was an important step in modernization. I am also interested in stopping in at the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum, another place in which the old and the new meet, except this one is focused on airplanes as opposed to trains. Finally, I will stop at Crossroads Coffeehouse & Music Company, where I can enjoy some food and live music. Music is an important part of O Brother and, therefore, of my journey.

Great way to include Austin as an important part of your journey. Good stuff all around!
ReplyDeleteI think what you found out about Pappy O'daniel was really neat. I like how you went into the back story of the characters of O brother Where Art Thou?
