Jackson, MS

Music on the road to Jackson:

Because I will be entering Mississippi, I will be unable to pass up the opportunity to listen to "Mississippi Queen" bu Mountain.  Also, I will be making further progress into the O Brother soundtrack.

Jackson

On the third day, I will head over to Jackson, the capital of Mississippi.  Politics play an important part in O Brother, and so I feel it is fitting to visit the political center of the state in which the film took place.  I will stay at the Best Western Executive Inn on Larson St.  One place I plan to visit while here is the state capitol building, so as to learn about politics in Mississippi, both old and modern.  By understanding real political issues in Mississippi, I can understand the film more.  I also plan on checking out Historic Farish Street.  This historic area of town serves as a reminder of the past, and I would like to immerse myself in the past for one night.  For dinner, I would eat at F, Jones’ Corner, a restaurant that occasionally features live blues musicians on stage.  If I go at the right time, I can experience the type of old-timey music that could be featured in O Brother.  If not, I still get to experience a good (and somewhat new) restaurant in an historic part of town.

Movie I will watch in my hotel room: The Ladykillers

This 2004 film is another gem from the Coen Brothers.  Also, it has many similarities to O Brother.  It was influenced by the work of Preston Sturges, it takes place in Mississippi, it places a strong emphasis on music, and it contains many old-fashioned elements as well as modern ones.  It could function as a companion piece to O Brother.

  1. I would add some text to these pictures. Talk about what you want to learn or experience, even if it might not pertain to O, Brother. If nothing else, you'll get a better grade.
